Under Italian tax law, VAT (value-added tax) must be charged on goods and services exchanged in the normal course of business, including conferences and educational events. The association must charge VAT to all attendees, exhibitors and sponsors and all VAT transactions must be reported to the Italian government. Do I Qualify for a VAT Refund? Corporations invoiced for attendee, exhibitor or sponsor fees may qualify for a VAT refund if they meet the rules specific to Italy. European Union registered companies (with the exception of Italian companies) can apply for a refund under the EC 8th Directive. Companies based outside of the European Union may qualify for a VAT refund if they are VAT registered. Please consult your tax advisor to find out if your company qualifies for a VAT refund.
